My Mom's garden

I had forgotten how beautiful the flora and fauna in my Philippines until I stepped out of the truck into our driveway.

One of the first things I noticed when I arrived home was my mom's garden. What used to be a small square patch of land at the corner where she housed her anthuriums and orchids, now expanded to each side and up and across the walkway. It was amazing.

Here's one oddity for most: egg shells for your plants! It's not uncommon in the Philippines to put eggs shells on plants. I have done it before when I was growing up and was helping her tend to her orchids. Somebody told me it had a fertilizing purpose. I just took that person's word as fact then. Who knows if it is true. I asked my inay why she decided to put the eggshells on the plant. "I really wanted to color the eggs first. " It was a non-answer. I guess it was a silly question for her. She explained that it made the plant more interesting. I agree. It did make it more interesting.
