After coming home from an overnight trip in Atlantic City, I was excited to come home to my son.
I was greeted with an excited hug and kiss. Xavier's grand parents were there to stay with him, but soon had to leave after Michael and I arrived.
Xavier was quiet and had his head down; he gave a hug and kiss to his Poppy and Abuela before they headed out the front door. Xavier was in Michael's arms on top of the steps by the front door and he looked towards his Abuela and was ready to cry. "Don't cry. You'll see them again. Blow them a kiss." He did. I took him from his father's arms and walked closer to the car so he can wave goodbye to his grand parents. He was quiet as he looked at the car driving away. I walked back inside the house and I set him down inside the living room.
Xavier broke down crying, face down on the floor. "I know you miss Abuela and Poppy but they you'll see them again soon."
I looked at the clock and saw that it was about time for him to nap. So picked up my crying child and through his tears he allowed me to change his clothes. "Do you want to follow Abuela?" He looked at me with his tearful eyes and said "...Abuela." So carried him outside and lingered outside for a while. He still would not stop crying. So I went back inside the house and took my car keys. As I strapped him in his car seat, he stopped crying and shouted several times, "I follow you Abuela!!!" like a battle cry. I had just put the car in gear and he shouted "Faster Mama faster, I follow you Abuela!"
I went around the block and Xavier kept saying "Abuela, I follow you Abuela!" I took the highway and he promptly fell asleep while softly and in a whisper he said "Abuela, I follow you, Abuela." As I carry my sleeping son back in the house, I am sure he is dreaming of fun times with his Poppy and Abuela.
