The super typhoon Haiyan brought with it unfathomable destruction of lives and property, leaving on its path, a trail of bodies littering the streets, dazed survivors who were too shocked and numbed from the enormity of the catastrophe. God must have been somewhere else was said by one person but it echoed in many minds and was soon repeated by many.
It breaks my heart to see my countrymen be brought down to their knees, spirit broken, dehumanized by this powerful force of nature. Where was God when this happened? I ask, as I witness the pain they suffer in surviving Haiyan. Who was better off? The dead or the ones who survived? I could not and dare not guess the pain a mother must have felt when she realized that all of her children and her husband had died, or a father who could not save his family because he was a police officer who decided to work that day, or a daughter who could not save her elderly parents when the storm surge hit her house...
In a time where we are supposed to be united in channeling our efforts to rebuild and pick up and heal, I witness another tragedy: my country polarized by the failed efforts of its leaders and the people who are frustrated that they could not help their suffering brothers.
The whole nation is grieving... and we may grieve in silence, in anger, in hope and in faith, and sadly it is showcased for all to see.
God must have been somewhere else one said... Close your eyes and feel His presence. God was there and God IS there. Many lives have been lost but countless souls have been saved that day, they are now in His presence. His reasons, I will not understand, but I pray for the people of my country, that their faith in His mercy remain steadfast. That is the very least I could do...
